Pet Naming Form:
We need help dreaming up names for the hundreds of cats and dogs we have to name each year at the Shelter. We would love ideas from you kids! Use this form to suggest names, and let us know what sort of cat or dog you think the name would fit. Sometimes it helps to think up some "features" (like what sort of names would fit a black cat, or a white cat) and then dream up the names. Have fun - and be creative! Pet Naming Form. You can mail or drop off the form when you are done. Or you can e-mail the form to Eleanor Chiquoine ateducator@saukhumane.org.

Shelter Day Camps:
The 2007 SCHS Shelter Day camp sessions are now over! This year, over 30 children participated in the highly acclaimed – and enjoyed! – Shelter Day camps run by Eleanor Chiquoine. Pet-loving children came to the Shelter from all over Sauk County to learn pet care, dog training, health care of pets, and even (the Middle School campers) to learn about and address issues like dog fighting. The campers also had fun doing pet or animal related crafts, and following (and marketing) one special pet during the week of their camp session.
The world needs more responsible and caring pet owners. Raising up and educating pet lovers is how Shelters try to make change for the future. These children will grow up to be the adults who care for animals, work to enact laws designed to protect animals, and have the skills and education to train and care for animals. These children - our hope for the future! It was a pleasure working with them!

Activity:
Butterfly Balancer
A simple-to-make butterfly that balances on its head, seeming to defy the laws of gravity. The secret to this
peculiar balancing act is the weights (pennies) that are taped under the butterfly's wings.Supplies Needed
- A piece of paper
- Thin cardboard (like from a cereal box)
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Markers, crayons, or paint
- Tape
- 2 pennies for each butterfly
- Optional: a small lump of clay and a small stick
![]() |
To make a perfectly symmetrical butterfly (which is necessary for this craft), trace half a butterfly on a folded piece of paper, then cut it out. |
![]() |
Trace the butterfly shape onto the cardboard. |
![]() |
Cut out the butterfly and decorate it using crayons, markers or paint. |
![]() |
Tape two pennies to the back of the butterfly. |

Now you can balance the butterfly's head on a pencil eraser (or you can make a stand for your butterfly by putting a stick in a ball of clay). You may have to adjust the position of the coins to make the butterfly balance on the head area. |
Volunteer:
We have lots of volunteer opportunities available for kids of all ages. Younger children need to volunteer with an adult.Click here for information on volunteering at the shelter
